EXPELLED FOR LIFE THE FORTHCOMING CANTON INSURANCE
LURE OF HONG KONG FOR CHINESE
RETURNS FIVE TIMES
A Chinese named Yeung Chung was this morning charged before Major C. Willson, O.R.E., at the Central Magistracy, with returning from banishment after he had been expelled from the Colony for life, six years ago.
Sub-Inspector Vincent, in charge of Police. Records, said that in Jan- uary, 1921, accused was banished for five years following several con- victions for stealing. He returned three times under that banisturent order and served various terms in Victoria Jail. He was eventually banished for life in January, 1923, since which time he had returned to Hong Kong wice. Altogether he had disregarded the banishment or der no fewer than five times.
His Worship passed sentence of 12 months' hard labour and 24 strokes of the birch.
A Job in France?
A returned banishee's excuse at the Kowloon Magistracy, where he appeared this morning on a charge of disobeying a banishment order. was that he had only intended to pass through the Colony, when he was arrested.
While he was in Macao he had heard that a syndicate was to bej formed to send a large number of coolies to France for work. He said that he had intended to obtain a job and go to France.
Inspector Stimson, prosecuting officer, produced Police records that. revealed the fact that only last May accused had been banished for 10
ycars.
