The item of £824,237 paid to the B.B.C. by the Post Office for year ending March 31 Just has attracted a good deal of attention in the daily Press. This is a very large amount, but it is difficult to ascertain, from a study of the ac counts which the B.B.C.

present, whether the amount is being ex. pended in the wisest manner. The gross amount received by the Post Office from wireless licences amount. ed to about one million and a quarter pounds, and from this the Post Office deducted what we quite frankly consider a monstrous gum for expenses of administration in issuing the wireless licences to the public. The remaining £254,872 is appropriated by the Exchequer.

A moment's thought will show that of this very large amount paid by listeners only 66 per ent., ON approximately 63, 7d. out of the 10. wireless licence. is actually spent en providing their entertainment! When the wireless licence was first instituted it was understood that

the amount. was to be devoted to the provision of broadcasting pro- grammes. What is how happening is that a little over half is, actually being spent in this connection, and the remainder taken by the Govern ment would appear to be nothing more or less than an extension of the entertainment tax:

Cheapest Form of Entertainment

Wireless is without doubt the cheapest form of entertainment, and while it may be necessary to pay a tax similar

that on theatres concerts and other forms of enjoy. ment, we must remember that this represents about one-fifth to one sixth of the total sum paid by the public. and the amount retained from the wireless licences repre- sents

about one-third. This ex- tortionate demand on the part of the Post Office and Exchequer may possibly have, a great deal to do with the poor programmes about which everybody at one time or an- other complains.

Even if the

Government decide

to reduce their demands to more reasonable proportions we do not know that it would be wise to hand

an increased amount to the B.B.C.

and engineering staffs or the the side of the new valve to the salaries they receive. We think H.T.2 + terminal. that more information should be given to the public so that it would' be possible to discover what pro- portion the expenditure or grammes bears to the administra tion salaries and expenses. Under its present"charter the B.B.C. would appear to be exempt from any investigation by a public authority, and I same inquisitive Member of Parliament will take the hint, we suggest that it is high time an al- teration was made, so that it would be possible for the ordinary pubic to get a clear and detailed state- ment of the Corporation finances.

Salaries v. Programmes

For maximuta efficiency a voltage of 150 should be used with a grid pro- bias of 10-12 volts. This will mean that there will be a similar voltage on the anode of the H.F. valve, and while this is quite per- missible with some of this year's 2-volt valves, it will be found that 2-volt valves of an older vintage should only have a maximum of 120 volts. If the latter potential is used a grid bias of 6-7% volta on the Pentode will be required, and we shall still get the equivalent of two stages of L.F. amplification with a

greater very much

grid swing and better quality as com- with the ordinary power valve. Altenatively a third high tension terminal could be inserted

between the existing LS. + and of course, to break the connection the H.T.2 terminal, being careful,

terminal, and we would have separate high tension voltages on each individual valve in the set. Owing to the high anode current it is advisable to provide an out- put transformer with large primary of about 2-1 ratio if we want the utmost efficiency, or extremely good results can be obtained by fit- ting the choke feed scheine.

Motor-boating

If a different transformer is used; from that specified in the "W.T.3." a popping ucise may be present or what is known in technical circles as motor-boating. This can gen- erally be cured by reversing the primary connections on the trans- former, or the output choke ar- rangement will help very much in obviating the disagreeable noise.) As far as we are aware there is only one output transformer on the; market especially designed for use. with the Pentode valve, and this; costs £1. Personally we prefer to use the cheaper method of a 20 Heury choke (12s. 6d.) with a two raf. condenser (3s. 6d.). No H.T. current can pass through the win- dings of the loud speaker, and there! is no possible danger of saturation or damage to the fine wires, and a more sensitive adjustment can be made to the diaphragm, The volume obtained from some of the Continental stations is so strong that only the largest type speakers

Lord Clarendor, Chairmau of the Board of Governors, receives | £3,000 a year, and this fee, it must be remembered, is not for a whole time job, but leaves him free to undertake other responsibilities. The last B.B.C. balance sheet gives details of accounts up to December 31st, 1927, but it is quite impossible

to discover the exact pro- portion of cost, and-if they persist in this attitude the listening publie can only come to one conclusion.

Using a Pentode in the "W.T.3"

It is quite a simple matter to use in the "W.T..," but there are one one of the new Pentode power valves

High Tension Consumption One disadvantage is the large high tension consumption, and if we are limited to dry pattėries if is essential for economical working to use the super-capacity type. So. far as the wet high tension bat- teries are concerned these will be satisfactory if the largest sizes are used. Probably the best method of proving the potential is by means of H.
