When the names of eleven. Chi- nese of the poolie class were called ¡at the Central Maglatracy this morning in answer to a charge of gambling, two of them (Nos. 7 and 8) were found to be absent. Only after glancing over the bunch did the Chinese detective notice that Nos. 7 and 8 were being represented by two others who were not arrested, yes- terday.
The Acting First Magistrate, Mr. E. W. Hamilton, ordered that the two daring substitutes be locked up, remarking at the same time that he would deal with them later.
The other accused, with the ex-
ception of the first and second, pleaded guilty to gambling and. were fined $3 with the alternative of five days' imprisonment.
