The Portland Vase (1st century, Roman Empire), the most famous glass vessel in the world; has been in the British Museum since 1810. Most people will be surprised to learn that the vase, for so long one of the great sights of the Bri- tish Museum, is not the property of the nation. It has merely been "on loan" from the Dukes of Portland. A visitor to the Museum in 1845 maliciously smashed the vase, but the frag- ments were subsequently pieced together with extraordinary skill-(Sport and General).
