"Distressful Exclamations Investigation and fearless obser vation narrowed the stories down to this that around a certain late- ly-erected tomb-stone distressful exclamations were frequently aud ible after dark, and that a vague, misty human shape was to be notic- ed sometimes peering at the inscrip- tion on the stone, sometimes stand- ing erect and wringing its hands, with every

not only appearance of grief but of anger.

Learned bodies took an interest in this disembodied sufferer; the local Circle did its best to exorcise the unquiet ghost, but without say effect. At last, however, an author, noted for preciosity, changed to pass through the village, and to visit the churchyard, where, of course, he saw the stone in ques-lair had been a proof-reader in a tion. Having studied it with ean-publisher's office. siderable care, he asked with a frown what had been the occupa ition of the deceased before being moved to this narrow residence. He learned that the occupant of the

The Split-Infinitive "Then, if that is the case," said he, "I think I can lay your ghost for you. If you will get the monu- mental mason responsible for this stone to alter the phrase 'to loving: Der A. Vioge

Watsons ly commemorate so that it shall Lane, Crawfords read "to commemorate lovingly or Mackintosha 'lovingly to commemorate' you will Sinceres have no more worry. Naturally no proof-reader can rest quietly in a grave beneath a stone hearing a split infinitive." By skilful mani-1 pulation of putty and a chisel the alteration was made, and at once the ecrie demonstrations ceased. I am not absolutely sure of the truth of this story, but in any case It serves to illustrate the conscien tiousness and loyalty to principle of the best proof-readers: The pub- lic, which takes books and their preparation so much for granted, should therefore bear in mind this story of the Proof-Reader's Ghost. A LONDON HOSPITAL

EXTENSION OPENED IN NEWINGTON CAUSEWAY

The Countess of Mayo visited Southwark to open a new exten- sion of the London Refraction Hospital in Newington-causeway. -

The hospital, which was first opened just over six years ago, treated 663 patients in its first year. During the past year near- ly 6,000 patients were treated. It has one of the finest equipments of its kind in the world, and at present £5,000 is required to free it from debt.
