The launching took place at the Societe Kiousin, a subsidiary organi- sation of the Messageries Maritimes, last week of a powerful sea-going motor tug.

The ceremony was quite unofficial, but the tug, we believe, is the first of its kind to be built and placed on service in Shanghai.

The new tug is 100 ft. long 22 feet wide, and has a depth of 10 ft. She is fitted with a Diesel oil engine of 670 horse-power and is capable of at- taining a speed of between 13% to 14 knots. All apparatus on board, such as cranes, steering gear, etc., are electrically driven, and the new ves- sel can, therefore, be used either as a salvage vessel or as a tug capable of taking charge of a steamer of 15,000: tons deadweight.
