WHAT IS WANTED FOR SHIP'S OFFICERS

A shipmaster now employed ashore in a port abroad makes the following enquiry in connection with the weur- ing of standard uniform........."I am now employed as a wharfinger, my chief duties consisting of herthing and un- berthing vessels. I should be glad if you would let me know the regula tions (if any) governing the wear-

ing

BE STARTED

The launching took place at the Societe Kiousin, a subsidiary organi- sation of the Messageries Maritimes, last week of a powerful sea-going motor tug.

The ceremony was quite unofficial, but the tug, we believe, is the first of its kind to be built and placed on service in Shanghai.

The new tug is 100 ft. long 22 feet wide, and has a depth of 10 ft. She is fitted with a Diesel oil engine of 670 horse-power and is capable of at- taining a speed of between 13% to 14 knots. All apparatus on board, such as cranes, steering gear, etc., are electrically driven, and the new ves- sel can, therefore, be used either as a salvage vessel or as a tug capable of taking charge of a steamer of 15,000: tons deadweight.

It is undertsood that two powerful|| anits will be put on the slipe in a low days' time.

In re- plying, the Secretary pointed out that the matter was not altogether satis- factorily dealt with in the official re- gulations--copy of which was sent to our member regarding standard uni- form in the circumstances it was considered advisable to submit the matter for the views of the Board of Trade, a

erly being received to the following effect:

In reply to your letter enquiring whether one of your Captain mem- becs is entitled to wear the Mer- cantile Marine Standard Uniform on certain occasions, while employ- ed ashore, I am directed by the Board of Trade to inform you that, provided the holder of

Master's certificate has been in cominand of a vessel registored in the British Ixies

there is no objection to his wearing the national standard Mer- cantile Marine uniform prescribed for a Master at a

public function

er on the occasion of his wedding, but he is not entitled to wear it when employed ashore (other than as a marine superintendent) in the course of such employment

In the course of further correspon dence, the Guild pointed out that many Masters might be adversely affected as regards the stipulation that they must have been in command of a vessel registered in the British Isles. The Board, however, stated that in accordance with Paragraph 6 of the Order in Council dated Decemn- ber 13, 1921, Officers who are or who have been employed in vessels regis tered at ports in the British Islands only are entitled to wear the Mercan- tile Marine Standard Uniform. Also that the order in Council instituting the

Standard Uniform applies to the United Kingdom and not to any other part of the British Empire. This

diffealty would. therefore, .be satisfac

disposed of in almost all cases

in view of the fact that practically all British officers have at some time served in ships registered at ports in the British Islands The Dolphin."
