When both trains arrive simultaneously the station-master resembles a cricket- er attempting to double the parts of bowler and wicket-keeper. He has to catch two staves, flying at his head from, opposite points of the compass, and fling them at the rapidly receding engines. How- ever, this seldom happens. At this point the parson got up and brazenly put his head out of the window.

"I thought it was William Jones the Gas that preached at Ebenezer last Sunday," said the driver.

"Yes," added the Chorus in confirmatory tone.

"Ah it was William Jones the Gas Was down to preach at Ebenezer, but he had promised to go to Llanfairhaiarn, to be at the christening, you know."

"Yes? said-the-Chorus-doubt- fully.

"It was his sister's little коп, you know, that was to be christen- ed William, after him."

"Oh yes!" said the driver and the Chorus together.

Well, William Jones the Gas gave his brother the sermon he was to preach, and away went Evan Jones the Fish in his best tail-coat and his sermon-case un- der his arm, most impressive."

"Yes!" said the Chorus deri- Bively.

And he got up into the pulpit; and opened the Bible, and gave out the text about the horse that snuffeth the battle from afar, you know, and began, Oh, it was a most impressive sermon!"

But the tale was left half told. With a shriek the 10.11 down pounded into the station, The stationmaster caught the staff as it flew from the cab of the 10:11 and tossed it, in the same motion, into the cab of the 10.13.

"Tell you the rest to-morrow!” he shouted. "Oh, it was very in- teresting!"

"Yes!" came from the engine, enthusiastically.

The 10.18 chuffed its way out of the station. The combative Welsh- man caught the parson's eye.

"It is a bad thing to read ser- mons," he said dogmatically, But the parson, refusing to be drawn, retired into the "Times,"

I must go and hear the other instalment to-morrow.

A little boy entered a grocer's shop and asked for a pennyworth

of salt.

A few minutes afterwards he again came and asked for 3 penny worth of salt.

The assistant served him and said nothing to him, but on his re- appearance a few minutes after- wards for another pennyworth of salt, he said: "My little man, what's the matter with your ma that she keeps wanting penny- worths of salt ?"

"Oh! It's not ma," the urchin said, "It's father. He's set the chimney on fire.'
