Viyella fine Blannel ensures restful sliep and minimises the discomfort and danger of changes of the temperature. Buoyantly light, Viyella is protective without any suggestion of stodginess. It guards your health during humid nights by absorbing excessive moisture and radiating it, a fact that obvintes dangerous

ncomfortable clamminess.

And no matter how exacting the conditions of weur and washing, you can depend upon 'Viyella' playing its part with a brave and carefree heart. No matter how often this rich looking fabric with its smart, unobtrusive desigur is washed, an improvement in appear- ance is the only noticeable difference.

Two Local Landmarks

Two landmarks stand out in the history of gambling in Singapore. The first, the cutting off of queues, compelled the police to alter their raiding tactics, for no longer was one policeman able to arrest, and hold half-a-dozen Chinese. The second, the closing down of the Johore licensed gambling farms, had far-reaching effects and is res. ponsible for the present develop- ment of gambling in Singapore.

and Fan-Tan undoubtedly flourish- led, but only the Chap-Ji-Ki lottery

was organised.

Chap-Ji-Ki banks, judging by the record of Court cases, were opened by clerks and eashiers in firms and banks and by certain recognized promoters, the most notorious of whom boasted he would run over any policeman attempting to stop him when or his way to Johore with the list of hackers and their stakes. He was defeated just outside Way- ang Satu Police Station by half-a-dozen handcarts usually to be found on this part of Bukit Tinish Road.

The craze for gambling does not depend on trade or other conditions but on the successful efforts of a number of promoters. There have heen outbreaks during boom time; there is an outbreak of it at the moment. It is without doubt the most important problem the police have to contend with.
