CHINA NEWS, LOCAL NEWS
and all the NEWS. The Weekly paper that saves you the trouble of writing Home.
Abundant interest is still being displayed at Home in developments in China and in Hong Kong, such being reflected in questions in the House of Commons.
This week's news covers a wide range of variety. Much has occurred. From the point of view of the reading public in other parts of the world, perhaps, the most pleasing is the confirmed report of the capture of men suspected to have taken part in the piracy of the British s.s. "Anking,” in which two Britons and a Chinese lost their lives.

The health of the boys apart from the usual minor ailments was very good and, as stated, the aver- age daily attendance was the best on record.. About 200 boys were vaccinated last month. I And that most boys in the school have been vaccinated at least twice. Hy- glene is taught throughout the school from the excellent notes compiled by the Medical Officer for Schools. The boys have been Inspected and examined by the Acting Medical Officer for Schools and a large number of defects were found amongst the new boys, chiefly defective vision. Staff Changes The discipline, on which so much depends and which is the first essential in a school, has been good both in and out of school. I have to thank my as sistants for much help in this rea- pect.
Standard Risen The standard in all subjects throughout the school has risen considerably in recent years (boys are younger and brighter than they used to be) and the curri culum has been widened and the syllabus stiffened up correspond- ingly, and I have little hesitation In saying that those in Class 4 are in a position to attempt a fair amount of Class 8 work. are doing a certain amount of Class B Arithmetic, and in suc ceeding years it ought to be pos- sible to begin Elementary Algebra and possibly Elementary Science. In addition they have their His- tory Reader (4th year). Thus in a year or two, as far as our boys are" concerned, Class 3 in the Senior Schools will be relieved of much introductory work, a partial Isolution of the general complaint (which I heartily endorse) that 3 years in the Senior School is in sufficient in which to prepare boys properly for Matriculation with out cramming, a pernicious form of education. Our endeavour to raise the standard of work and widen the curriculum and syllabus has its drawbacks.
