"CHANGE AND IMPROVEMENT.”

The Duke of Connaught, after | expressing his appreciation of their "kind action in coming to congratulate him," went on to say: During these sixty years I have seen many changes and improve- ments in the Army. I would es- pecially like to refer to the fol Jowing changes that have taken

place in its administration and or- ganisation.

The housing of the troops, and the improvement in the sanitation af the barracks,

The great improvement in the messing of the men.

The interest now taken in their amusementa and recreations, and in the encouragement.of all Eng- lish games.

The excellence of the physical, instruction, and the training of the men's bodies, so as to make. them fit for their strenuous duties.

The great Improvement in the system of discipline, and the humane manner in which all: punishments are. carried out.

The discouragement of drink- ing, and the wise advice now given to the men against vice and immorality.

drill, in contrast to his elder brothers, showed that he was born to be a soldier. And no one could have followed his calling more un- swervingly, nor interpreted the conditions of service more, con. scientiously.

The Army to-day recalls that at time when the privileges of Royal birth were more emphasis- ed than to-day, the young Royal soldier shirked neither the tedious: nor the testing duties of the career he had chosen.

CAREER OF WORK.

He spent the usual two years as a cadet at the Royal Military Aca- demy, and thence after a short ex- perionce in both the Royal En- gineers and the Royal Artillery, he passed to the Rifle Brigade. Не might thus claim an all-round ex- perience which even in these days of increased co-operation remains unique. As early as 1870 he went on active service in the Red River Expedition, and afterwards, as r brigade major at Aldershot and A.A.G. at Gibraltar, Alled staff bilets that were essentialy useful, not honorific. Then in 1882 he again went on active service, com- manding the Guards Brigade in Lord Wolseley's Expedition against Arabi and the Egyptian rebels, and sharing in the decisive battle of Tel-el-Kebir.
