A peculiar case, and one which caused the Shanghai Provisional Court officials to hesitate, was that in which a young ChinesD was charged with abducting a Chinese Rirl. The accused was a labourer of Chapel and he was charged with running off with a girl against the wishes of her parents. The accus- ed informed the Court that he had been betrothed, to the girl but not having the money to purchase her freedom from her parents and wish- ing to get married, he ran off with the young lady and, subsequently married her. He told the Court) that the father had agreed to dis- pose of his daughter for $240 and a sum of $170 had been paid on account. The Court decided to ro- inand the accused in order to en- quire into his story.
