FORGED NOTES.

TENDERER GETS OFF AND CHANGER COMMENDED.

MAGISTRATE'S DOUBT.

THE CHINA MAIL,

on

At the Central Magistracy Saturday, Inspector J. Clarke charged a Chinese before Mr, R. E. Lindsell with the unlawful posses- sion of four forged 20 tical Siam- ese notes.

The case for the prosecution was that the accused visited a money changer's shop at No, 226, Queen's Road West on Friday afternoon and attempted to change the Slam- ese notes into local money.

When the money changer dis- covered that the notes were for- geries, the pccused at once bolted. The master of the shop gave chase and arrested the accused who was turned over to a policeman.

Mr. Lindsell commended the

money changer, Yong Tong, for chasing the accused, but said that he would have to give the accused the benefit of the doubt, as it was not likely if he knew that the notes were forgeries the accused would have attempted to pass them at a money changer's shop.

The Common Serjeant sen- tenced Colonel Eaton to four years' penal servitude, and Sir | Charles Buckworth Herne-Soame and Mr. Harley each to six monthe imprisonment in the second' division.

He described Eaton as a "public plunderer and a serious danger to the community,” and Sir Charles Herne-Soame as "a dummy in the position of what is called guinea-pig."

Defendants were charged with conspiring together to defraud such people who might receive prospectuses or pamphlets issued by the Corporation, and to obtain money from them by falsely pre- tending that certain reports in the prospectuses were true reports upon the fuel.

Financial Position. The jury returned a verdict of "Guilty" against each of the three defendants on all counts.

Mr. Percival Clarke, counsel for the Crown, speaking of the past records of the men, said Sir Charles Buckworth Herne-Soame was sixty-four, and was the tenth baronet, who lived with his son and daughter in Shropshire.

Sir Charles was adjudged bank- rupt for a second time in March, 1911, when his liabilities were £11 and his assets a few books valued at £6.

During the last fifty years with which he had been associated with Eaton, Sir Charles had allowed his title to be used as a sort of bait in connection with a number of doubtful companies. His financial position was always in such a condition that it tempted him to lend his name to these things.

In regard to Harley, said Mr. Clarke, he acted very largely under the orders and instructions of Eaton and took a subordinate part.
