The General had just served two terms as President of the United States and toured the world in 1877-79, being entertained in Japan by the late. Emperor Meiji and his consort.
On August .25 of next year a memorial commemerating the Grant visit will be unvelled in Uyeno park, Tokyo, by the man who acted as chairman of the Grant reception committee half a century ago. It probably will be a fountain and an inscribed shaft of stone, and it will be erected between two trees plant- ed in the park by General Grant and his wife. The trees are still thriv-
ing close to the equestrian statue of Prince Komatsu, first president of
