CHINA NEWS, LOCAL NEWS
AND ALL THE NEWS
SEND IT HOME'
Events have moved swiftly in South China during the past week, though there is little to report on the Yangtsze and northern fighting and political fronts. The affair of most importance has been the taking of Canton by the Communists, the coup being staged last week-end when there were few Ironside troops in the city. The "Reds," however, did not hold the place long, rapidly fleeing when sufficient soldiery had been collected to oppose them. During the few days of their occupation they reduced the city to a state of chaos. There was a little bloodshed, but considerable looting, and when the city was relieved by the Government troops the inhabitants in many instances were on the point of starvation. Efforts to bring the disorders to Hong Kong were prompt- ly frustrated by the local police, and a number of arrests were
as the Canton boats arrived here.
In addition to carrying the full story of the taking and recapture of Canton, this week's "Overland Mail" also con- tains an exclusive account of how "Red" agitators attempted to promote a strike among the workers of the Colony,
Local news--social, commercial, sporting, etc.-is fully "dealt with in this issue of the Overland" and a comprehensive report is given of the morphia case proceedings in the Police Court.
