Canberra, Oct. 30. After a
series of exciting ex- periences during his work of con- trolling the New Guinen goldfelds at the request of the Federal Ministry, Mr. J. D. McLean, the official warden, visited Canberra in the, week-end to confer with the Minister for Home and Territories (Mr. Marr), Mr. McLean, who is returning to New Guinea, almost immediately, expressed the belief that there was tremendous mineral wealth to be obtained on the fields but emphasised the difficulties and dangers of winning it. His duties entailed visits alone (except for Foreign Exchange and General Bank-native carriers) to regions never ing business transacted.

The stone was easily worked.
If the reef entered the sulphides carrying gold it should prove a remarkably good proposi- tion. It was, however, in difficult country, covered with dense timber, mosses, fallen trees, and other de bris and very little prospecting had
