BRITAIN'S PEACE GESTURE IGNORED.

MORE CRUISERS SANCTIONED.

The announcement from White House that President Coolläge will recommend Congress immediately to sanction the construction of additional cruisers has caused some surprise in view of the gesture of the British Admiralty which pro- poses to lay down only one cruiser Instead of the three contemplated next year in accordance with the previously announced programme. —Reuter's American Service.

In the House of Commons, Mr. W. C. C. Bridgeman, First Lord of the Admiralty, stated that the Geneva Naval Conference left a hope that limitation might be reached; therefore the Government was reluctant to lay down the two, cruizers originally provided for, one of 10,000 tons and the other, a smaller one. He assured the questioner that the protection of trade routes and food supplies of Great Britain had been faken into consideration in the connection, The Home Secretary pointed out
