JUNK'S ESCAPE,

ALLEGED ATTEMPT AT PIRACY.

ONE MAN KILLED.

A piracy was alleged to have been attempted during the latter part of last week in Chinese waters. The would-be victim was a Hong master Kong Junk which, her avers, was very lucky to csenped.

According to the master of the junk, which arrived in port dur- Ing the week-end, his junk left Shaukiwan for Pinghat, in Chinese.

The annual report of the Seere- Shanghai, Swatow, Jardine's: territory, on Thursday. She tary for War on the traffe in Panama Canal last year states that it exceeded that of any preceding year. Excess receipts over expen- diture umounted to $16,487,630 vessels and British and American comprised 23 and 55 per cent. of the traffic, respectively.

The War Secretary urged the im- medinte construction of a' dam to provide for additional storage of for the Canal. The damn water - would be best if constructed at Chagres River at Alhajuela. Addi- tional storage would enable lockage for an annual traffic of one hundred million tons, which was nearly four times that of the present traffle.

The cost of the project he esti- mated at 10 to 12 million dollars and it would take aix'years to com- plete. Reuter's American Service.

Portuguese the Powers are said to be careful- ly investigating measures to meet all the circumstances which might arise out of such a general | suppression.

Ministers of the Five Powers to-day met at the official re- sidence of the Japanese Minister and negotiated on the question.

The rumour reporting the re- jection by the Powers of the British proposition is totally groundless; the tendency among the Ministers is all in favour of the materialisation of such con- certed action.-Toho.
