BORNEO PASSAGE RATES.
The excessive cost of existing deck passage rates between Hong Kong and Sandakan was the sub- ject of a letter from the Govern- ment of North Borneo which was discussed at the North Borneo Chamber of Commerce on Septom- ber 30. It was eventually resolved to approach the Agents of the Indo- China S.N. Company with a view to obtaining a reduction in the rates.j The matter of the proposed in- crease in freight and passage rates by the Indo-China 3.N. Company steamers was also considered at a meeting of the Chamber on the fol- lowing day when a letter on the subject was read from Mesars, Yong Soon and Co. The Chairman 'in- formed the meeting that the local Agents hoped to be able to submit further detalls at an early date,. as to the reasons necessitating the pro- posed increases, and it was decided to postpone discussion of this mat- ter pending the receipt of further details.
The total numbers of Asiatic deck passengers-arriving during the 24 hours eaded at 9 a.m. terday was 164.
Continuing, Lieut. Halaban said that there were no junks near the "Irene" at the time of the firing on the ship. The nearest junk must have been at least a mile off. The sea was so lit up by the searchlights of the L4 and L5 that escape by swimming away from the ship must have been detected. I everywhere.
