Imperial unity and understanding between the parts of the British Commonwealth are to be served by wireless broadcasting, it will not be, through sporadic and largely unintelligible reception.

Arising out of our rejection of these proposals we are now criti. cised on three grounds-(1) in difference to Imperial considera- tions, (2) technical incapacity, and (3) a "dog-in-the-manger" attitude towards amateur co-operation. The beat answer to auch accusa- tions is contained in an accurate recital of the relevant facts.

ACCUMULATOR CAPACITY.

show that many matters of quite an We still receive Inquiries which elementary character are not pro- perly understood. These queries, for the most part, emanate from new readers and from those who have only recently embraced radio as hobby,

this is so in the big sense, it ap plies, I believe, with even greater force in the matter of the intelll-a given number of hours. An ac gent employment of the medium of cumulator may be marked "2-volt, wireless telephony. It is precisely means that it will deliver a 2-volt 60 ignition, 30 actual." This for the reason that we yield to no one in keenness on Empire conso-hour for 30 hours. The ignition current at the rate of one amp. per lation through wireless that I con- rating can be ignored, since it does tinue to resist proposals which not apply to wireless. am sure are inimical, not only to the best interests of wireless but also ultimtely to the well-being of the British Empire itself.

One matter that seems to perplex a great many is that of accumula- tor capacity. What is amperage? It has been aptly said that the What are ampere hours? We began experiments leading to Empire broadcasting just over four years ago. On the transmission aida we have made considerable progress, and we have taken full advantage of the results of success ful experiments elsewhere. On the reception side progress has not been so rapid, and our research is still going on. The practical result of work done during these four years -and I include the experiments in Holland, the United States, and elsewhere is that at isolated' mo- ments it is possible in almost any part of the world to pick up some- what distorted music and speech transmitted by a short-wave station. On only some of these rather iso fated occasions reception is rea- sonably good, Nefther the time nor the duration of these admitted- ly unsatisfactory moments of recep tion can be anticipated. Therefore every factor essential to service is absent. No promise can be given of the successful reception of any Item at a given moment. This is a statement of fact, and because I, as an engineer, supported by the considered judgment of my en gineering colleagues have insisted upon the recognition of this fact, the B.B.C. is accused of a variety of crimes both against wireless and against the British Empire.

Having said this, let me add that, It is always well to have 100 volts these for five hours. If the

While we go forward with the technical aide of the work, the cog- nate problems of programmes and expediture are being considered. Ultimately we shall have to allow for occasions on which there most be transmission throughout the 24 hours of the day. There are also problems of copyright charges to be solved. Then there are arrange- ments to be concluded with the broadcasting authorities oversea, whose co-operation will be essen- tial. It should not be overlooked that effective Empire broadcasting will become possible only in terms of relays through, the broadcasting systems of the Dominions and the discharge of the cells is to con- BEST COUGH MEDICINE, MADE.
