Touching in its simplicity, the memorial service held on the Wal- Insey ferry steamer "Royal Iría". yesterday, saya the "Journal of Commerce" of April 25, admir- ably served the purpose of recalling the "Nelson touch" which charac- terised the epic attack on the Zee- brugge Mole on · St. George's Day, 1918, by the "Dover Patrol," under. the command of Admiral Sir Rager Keyes, and virtually ended

the disastrous submarine war which for so long had been waged by the Germans.

It also served another useful pur- pose. That was to reawaken the interest of Merseyalders in the out- standing part played in the memor- able naval enterprise by the Wal- lusey ferry steamers "Royal Iris" and "Royal Daffodil." which Ad- mirni Keyes, subsequently writing to the Wallasey Corporation, des- cribed as "your two stout buais," The event attracted large concourse of people, in spite of the fact that the climate condi- |tions were for from pleasant, con- sisting, as they did, of a bitingly cold wind and driving rain. Prior to the service, which was: as usual, organised by the Comrades Association and held in mid-river. Lieut-General Sir A. R. H. Hutchison inspected a num- ber of ex-naval men of different ratings and marines, who were drawn up on the Liverpool Landing slage. The service itself was con- ducted with much feeling by the Rev. Lord Thurlow, honorary chap lain to the Royal Marine Old Com rades Association, and was held on the upper deck of the steamer.

While the vessel was being slow ly navigated from the berth she had occupied at the landing-atage into mid-river, several appropriate hymna were gung with much hearti- ness, and afterwards Lord Thurlow, in the course of a touching address, paid feeling tribute to the valour of the officers and men who had given their lives for Great Britain at Zeebrugge.
