WIRELESS MESSAGES. FOREIGN STEAMERS departures.

COMPLAINT BY CANTON STATION,

No foreign vessel, mercantile or naval, should operate their wire-. less equipment when in port, is the demand made by the Chief of the Canton Wireless Station, Mr. Wong Chun-min.

In asking the Military authorities to instruct the Foreign Office to take up the matter with the various Consals, Mr. Wong points out that the work of the Government station has recently been much interfered with in consequence of the collision of electric waves originating from the Government station and the foreign vessels in harbour equipped with wireless. In spite of warning signals given by the Government station, these foreign vessels com- municate regularly with other places by means of their wireless apparatus, thus causing delay, and in some cases interruption, to the messages to be transmitted by the Government station. This must not be allowed to continue, as many urgent military messages cannot be delayed.

MUST PAY RENTAL TAX.

Foreign morchant-ships in Can-" ton will be detained if they refuse to pay the ship rental (charter) tax Instituted by the Department of Finance.

The Ship Rental Tax

Bureau, which is charged with the collection, of this special tax, has been ordered to take strong mes- aures in consequence of a report that foreign shipping agents refuse to pay the rental tax for their ships.

This is shown in a White Paper issued by the Home Office and is proved by the number of settle ments and claims under the Work- men's Compensation Act.
