MAN WHO BUILT FINST IRONCLAD.
DEATH OF MR. ARNOLD HILLS,
Mr. Arnold Frank la, the in- valid shipbuilder, who spent a great part of his life in, an effort, to save the shipbuilding industry on the River Thames, died at his home at Hammerfield, Penshurst, Kent, where he had lived in retire- ment for many years, a martyr tę rheumatism. Both in sickness und health Mr. Arnold Hills was one of the most indomitable men who ever breathed. He took up many chuses -Tarif. Reform, temperance, vege tarianism—and advoented them with untiring vigour and per tinacity.
As an Oxford undergraduate he won in 1878 the English mille cham- plonship in what was, for the run- ning paths of those days, the fine time of min. 28 4-5sec. He also played for Oxford against Cam- bridge at Association football and won his international cap in 1879, By sad contrast he became a physi- en wreek through, rheumatism, During many years he was compell ed to le at full length in an in- valid's bedehair, unable to move band or limb.
So complete was his prostration that he could not raise a finger to support the weight of a book or even to read a letter. Yet he never gave in. With the ald of a secre- ary, he dealt with a heavy corres- pondence and kept himself abreast of the time in every branch of in- tellectual activity... Mr. Hill's pungent letters on political and economic topics used to appear fre- quently in the "Daily Mall." His special motor-car, made to take his invalid couch, was well known in London streets.
