A fine of $100 each was imposed by Major Willson, yesterday after- noon on four Chinese charged with the unlawful possession of 1802 popiu lottery tickets on the second floor. of No. 290 Hillier Street. Two further charges of keeping.a gam- bling house and manufacturing the tickets were. dismissed.
When the raid was made at 12.30 a.m., on April 14 by Sub-inspector Shaftain and a posse of district watchmen and detectives the first three accused were found in the rear cubicle sitting at two tables, while fourth accused was going) into the front cubicle.. On the tables in the rear cubicle were found four lots of lottery tickets- 340 in front of No. 1 accused, 179 in front of No. 2 and 780 in front) of No. 3. All had Chinese pen and Ink near the piles of tickets. The fourth lot of 603 tickets was on a table under a coat hanging from the wall. Fourth accused who was. found entirely covered with a blanket in the front cublele claim-f ed the coat as his and the 609 tickets were connected with him.
