MOCK AUCTIONS.

TRICKS FOR FLEECING THE PUBLIC.

Revelations of the practices of mock auctioneers have been made In the course of an investigation carried out by the Incorporated Society of Auctioneers and Land- ed Property Agents.

Every pitch or sale is attended by two or three "ricks" or "gees". -confederates of the auc- tioneers. When the auctioneer has his audience sufficiently ex- cited by "plunder" lines those given away to create interest he puts up a hinten lot," apparent- ly worth about £2. He instructs his floorman to wrap it up and charge the lady only 28. for it. The clerk makes a pained pro teat, but is instructed to mind his own business. The floorman disappears, ostensibly to wrap, the article up, but quietly re- places it in stock, while the au- dience's attention is attracted by another offer.

The hammerer now begins to knock down some good lots to his "ricks" who bid up to 28. for en article which is covered up, and the Auctioneer shows his appre- ciation of their trust by giving it to them for nothing. fidence thus angendered in the audience, the auctioneer's work is now quite esey.
