A QUESTION OF DEVIATION.

LONG-DRAWN-OUT CASE.

It is a well-settled principle of law that where a contract is made for a voyage between named ports and contains terms which confer privileges on the owners, those terms do not apply if in the course of the voyage the vessel makes a deviation from her direct route not either expressly or impliedly authorised by the contract. It is another principle equally well set- tled that where a charter party confers liberty to call at ang port in any order the words will ordin- arily be taken to mean any port on the line of route between the port of departure and the port "of destination. NEW YORK-MANILA TRIP.
