admit I ought to have known Mr. Horniman is an in- dependent and honourable journe alist, and has suffered much in mind and money by reason of his attachment to India. I also real- ise, owing to his unremitting and advocacy of uncompromising Indian rights, he was, and is sub jected to a campaign of slander and villication by those opposed to his cause, and I am sorry should have caused pain and an- noyance to an English gentleman who loves this country as his own. I consider myself fortunate that, in spite of the unreasonable at- titude I took up in Court, and in spite of the fact that I published a pamphlet last year when Mr.
18.-B..L Talo Horniman was not in India, and May 11-3.0, Tilbor consequently was unable to vin- dicate his honour in Court, that he should be so generous as to accept this expression of my singere regret, without wishing to me punished and perhaps ruined"
Counsel for Mr. Horniman said he did not believe the Sinan cial position of the accused was so bad as he could not pay Rs. 1,000, and it was impossible for Aug. him to conceal from the Court the fact that the pamphlet was writ-out ten in the interest of the deposed Nov. Maharaja of Indore, in whose in Deci terest they knew, for a 'fact, that Jan. money flowed in Bombay like water..
see
The pamphlet was sold as six annas per copy and Counsel did not think any profit was intended as it was written with a deliberate object.
