“THE LOVE STORY OF ALIETTE BRUNTON.”

SHOWN TO-DAY AT THE QUEEN'S.

It is not our task here to: comi- ment upon the literary quality; of Gilbert "Frankau's novel, for that has already been done by the book reviewers.. "The Love Story of Allette Brunton"" had record anley and as the author himself has ex- pressed in a letter to Sir Oswald: Stoll, his Immense satisfaction with the manner in which it has been adapted to the screen, it must. be"almost a foregone conclusion that the Alm la assured of more than ordinary success. We must confess that we incline to the opinion that a little more subtlety in the method of portrayal might. have added still more to its Interest, but that is by the way. The chief [point, and it is one that cannot be joverlooked is that thousands of people have read the novel and willi want to see it dramatisod, and that furthermore the screen version keeping well to the published story, should not disappoint them.

T

Hector Brunton, an up-to-date and successful KC., holds antiquat- ad ideas about a wife being the per- sonal property of the husband, al- though, fortunately for him, he. professes other ideas in the conduct of his profesafon. Because he has proved unfaithful Allette refuses him admission to her room, and, in fact, ands herself attracted by Ronald Cavendish, a young barris- ter. Despite all the pressure they cary bring to bear. Hector refuses to divorce her, and in a murder case concerning one Lucy Towers, rescris even to perjury to hang the women in order to humble Ronald, who is stunding for the defencer He is defeated, however, by the other's disclosure of his lies; but

from Ronald that his ardour it is only after severe thrashing. possess Allette is cooled and the petition for divorce flied, which opens up the path of happiness. to the two loverd

This is the popular sort of story bhat, in these days goes dowri ra-. markably well. At times we felt i rather sorry for Hector, who did not appear to be half the dog we were led to expect. Isobel Elsom plays both the part of Allette Brunton and the role which offers her great opportunities aa Lucy Towers her make-up in the latter role being extremely well done. Henry Victor, as Ronald Cavendish le the lover. with James Carew as tho surly and stupid Hector Brunton In the supporting cast. is Mrs. Haydon Coffin, Minnie Leulle, and H. Humberston Wright, who all meet the demande upen them adequately.

At the private screening last week the Alm was favourably re- ceived, the opening scenes of the hunt and the cross-country run be-" ing greeted with enthusiastic applause The court scenes too are well staged, and so is the murder. of the bestial William Towers," for which the wife stands trial.

The following is the cast: Isobe!!
