Angerstein is the manager of a steel works, and the persons he is alleged to have mdered are his wife, his mother-in-law, his sister- in-law, a housemaid, two garden- ers, and, two office employees. After killing his victims with hatchet blows and knife thrusts, Angerstein set fire to the villa in which the bodies lay, hoping to destroy all traces of his guilt; and then stabbed himself to support his statement that the murderers were a gang of thieves who had attacked the villa and, after mur- dering all the occupants, had set it in flames,
