After killing his victims with hatchet blows and knife thrusts, Angerstein set fire to the villa in which the bodies lay, hoping to destroy all traces of his guilt; and then stabbed himself to support his statement that the murderers were a gang of thieves who had attacked the villa and, after mur- dering all the occupants, had set it in flames,
