CRADLED UNDER WING OF CHURCH OR CHAPEL

SOME HUMBLE BEGINNINGS.

It is an interesting and little known fact that many of our most famous football clubs have been cradled under the wing of church or chapel, writes W. Greenwood..

In 1874, for example, Aston Villa made its modest bow to the world in which it was to become so famous on a plece of waste ground in a local park, the players being youths associated with Aston Villa Wesleyan Chapel, Fortunately they had for their first captain George Ramsay, a young Scots man, with a rare zeal for and, knowledge of the game; and, under his auspices the club "quickly waxed strong, and soon left far behind it the humble day when its" first gate realised a modest five. shillings.

It was a number of enthusiastic youths, members of St. Mary's Church Young Men's Chriation Association, who combined, one day in 1885, to found the South ampton Club, which has won so many laurels on the football field The nickname "The Saints" by which they are so widely known, still proclaims this origin and their president was Canon Wilber force, the popular sport-loving rector of St. Mary's..

Neither team took bathing suits, Mr. Fogg, the referee, considerately called off the League game (the ground was rather damp); and the Notting ham players crossed the Mersey to watch their pals.
