It is an interesting and little known fact that many of our most famous football clubs have been cradled under the wing of church or chapel, writes W. Greenwood..
In 1874, for example, Aston Villa made its modest bow to the world in which it was to become so famous on a plece of waste ground in a local park, the players being youths associated with Aston Villa Wesleyan Chapel, Fortunately they had for their first captain George Ramsay, a young Scots man, with a rare zeal for and, knowledge of the game; and, under his auspices the club "quickly waxed strong, and soon left far behind it the humble day when its" first gate realised a modest five. shillings.
