There is tile for me to say AB regards the liability side of the balance sheet. Capital, reserve NEW ENGINEERING & SHIP-funds and dividend equilization funds remain the same. The de- preciation fund shows an increase of Tis. 18,617.11 arising" by an addition of Tls. 25,000 from work ing account before the computation of this year's profits, less Tis. 6,382.89 used to write down certain of the company's assets. Our plant has as usual been maintained at a high state of efficiency and cost charged against profits.

Total' ........... Tís. 376,294.05 Before putting this to the meet ing, however, I will as usual make a few remarks on the balance sheet and in connection with the company's affairs generally.

1923,

You will, I feel sure, be glad to hear that the year under review shows a substantial increase in cur activities, not only as compared but also with the with previous year, and the results are mainly attributable to the turnover covering repair work, largely due to the increasing number of vessels visiting this port and thereby offering a wider scope to our

business.

BUILDING BIGGER CRAFT.,

We have also heen kept ex- tremely busy with new construc tion work, having built and de- livered during this period no less than 40 craft, ranging from small motor boats to sea-going vessels, and I am glad to be able to state that the present year has opened well in this direction, the company having recently contracted for the construction of several craft, two- of which. are of very fair size. Other inquiries to hand indicate that during the course of the year we shall be afforded opportunity for further activity on this side of our business.

Reference to the balance sheet will show you that there has again been a call for capital ex- penditure, all of which have been financed out of current profits, without in any way adversely affecting our cash balance avail able for the payment of the divi- dends which you will presently be asked to sanction.

The land account appears at the same figure as in last year's balance sheet.

Buildings, plant and machinery show an increase during the year of Tis. 62,576.60, partly accounted for ly the co:struction of two Semi-detached houses on the com- pany's residential land in Wayside Park district for the accommoda. tion of senior members of our staff. and to which allusion was made when addressing you last year Other expenditure under this head- ing has been incurred in the erec- tion of new workshops and the further conversion of the com- pany's plant from steam to electric power, which has been in gradual process for some time..

DOCK ENLARGED; Dock. Shows an increase of Tls. 16,303.42 due to effecting cer. tain necessary improvements, which operations also permitted ä further lengthening of 12 feet to the dock.

Stock. Tis., 454.696.18. This figure shows a reduction of some Tis. 34.000.00 as compared with the position last year and is in part due to slight reduction in prices.

Works in progress. Tls. 185,-, 084 82 represents current repair and construction work on hand at the end of the year.

Before sitting down, I am sure you will all wish to join me in bidding farewell to our managing director, Mr. A. W. Brankston, who is leaving us for good at the end of next month in order 10 retire to the old country to be near his children, whose education: be wishes to see completed in Eng- land.

Mr. Brankston has been with us for 22 years; he was appointed assistant manager in 1906, and has acted as manager director since 1916. I am sure our good wishes accompany him. Home, where we trust that for many years he will enjoy the best of health.

It was proposed by Mr. A. W. Burkill and seconded by Mr. N. L Sparke, that the amount standing to the credit of Profit and Loss account Tis. 376,294.05 be distri- buted as proposed Carried un- animously.

inilitant disposition of the Chinese, such operations are not pressed to a decisive termination, and are subject to vicisitudes, In the course of which money payments for subsidising the actual com batants are a necessity. A further cause of indecisive results in the Ineffectiveness of cannon and rifle fire, owing again to the money question, which causes interior ammunition to abound... No im mediate solution of China's internal troubles seems in sight, though at times the number of conflicting chieftains has lessened, and the prospect of one outstanding figure emerging from the conflet has thus improved. Inasmuch as the strife in China, whenever active, causes hoarding and at the same time a demand for silver coin with which to pay troops, any recrudes- cence of trouble is a bull point for "silver; any prolonged period of lassitude is a bear point) fer cash held up for safety in Shanghail and other ports would then be released for circulation.

SILVER IN 1924.

SAMUEL MONTAGUE AND Co.'s REPORT,

The range of prices during the year was slightly more than that which obtained in 1923. The highest quotation was 36 1/16d. fixed for cash delivery on Oct. 9, and for forward delivery on Oct. 8 and 9. The lowest quotation for cash delivery was 311⁄2d. (on Dec. 29)a: d for forward delivery 3154d. (on the sante, day). Thus the range of the cash price was 49/16d. or 13.5 per cent. (calculated on the mean price) and that of the forward rite 47/16d. or 13.1 per cent. Both highest and west prices were seen in the list quarter of the year, the range for the first three quarters being only had. (6.9 ner cent) for cash delivery, and 25 d. (7.7 per cent) for forward delivery...

Though actual movements, of silver in London have been diminished owing to the reasons. above set out, dealings in silver for forward delivery have been qulle active. Very large specula tive accounts for China and India have been opened and closed, necessitating, as customary, exten $ion from one two-month period to another, and a considerable amount of business has been transacted in

London as the world's silvercentre for foreign clients, though the silver was not imported into the United Kingdom, but was shipped an instructions of the buyers direct to them from America and else where.

Internal strife in China has don tinued to create speculative move ments in silver and China exchange. The situation, obscure, as always to Western eyes, at times seemed to clear. Feng, the Christian General, transferred his allegiance from one

isolation. Taking into account the improved condition of trade in the Far East, the possibility of coinage demand from the Continent, and the present comparatively low level reached by the price of silver, there appears to be some ground for hopeful view of the future of

the market during 1925.
