Newman, who suggest- ed the conditions, was not in parti- eularly good form, never really finding his touch until the last day of the match, when he made breaks of 404, 290, and 240, and made up a lot of leeway. But, as Smith was over 1,000 ahead when play began yesterday, this spurt was too late. Newman told our representative that he found the conditicus rather more detri- mental to his style of play than to the open game favoured by Smith; at the same time he paid a tribute to the marvellous stroke play which had brought Smith out in front. He said that the test match had revealed new possibili ties in billiards, and expressed his confidence that more would be seen of the brighter billiards pro2. duced by his conditions.
