"Double Bine" writes: Nothing succeeds like success, and perhaps thus is one of the chief reasons why the All Blacks on from victory to victory, Then again they have the tradition of that great New Zealand side of 1905 to uphold them. The hour is not ripe for a genuine comparison between the present All Blacks and those stalwarts who only capitul nted once during their tour in that memorable match with the strength of Wales. This season's players are in. the adolescent stage of their tour, when they are gradually blending themselves into a perfect- ly working machine. Like their

pre-war brothers, they are wonder- ful specimens of superb manhood, from the nineteen-years-old back, Nepit, to the brothers Brownlie. massive giants at forward: All the members of the pack are six feet or over,"one of the Brownlies being six feet three, and it is a sheer de light in the eye of the trib Rugby enthusiast to watch there hefty

The back division have an aver- age, weight of eleven stone, being thirteen pounds lighter than that which represented the 1995 co- bination, The chief difficulty of the selgetors was in finding re liable full-back, and only one has been, brought over, Nepia, and he WIS originally "a. five-righths, Already this youth has proved his worth, and his spectacular play is one of the brightest features of the fifteen.

Perhaps Cooke, at five-eighths, is the outstanding player of the tour so far. His deadly landling. and uncanny opportunism make for sheer genius. He is one of those people who can seize the hundredth chance and turn it into success. Tn a huttle of speed his extraordinary pace and stamina will get his there a fraction before his oppaneils, but it is those little fractions that mean so much to a player of Cooke's mentality and imply much danger to the op- position,

If he has one kult it is that of trying to do too much, while in

ummon with the rest of the | side he is inclined to bunch too close when waiting for an expec- tant pass. Bunching is one of the most noticeable weaknesses in side whose running is so beautifully straight.

SINGLES WINNER.

MES JAMES HATTAN,

Mr. James McMillan, New York society woman, was the winner of the women's singles in the Hot Springs, Va., tennis tournament.

Smith gained his victory by one of the finest displays of stroke command ever seen on a billards table, making 413 and many other good breaks, besides returning a sessional average of 146. In the final session he aggregated 764, which included a break of 197. Nevertheless, when our repre- sentative spoke to him after the match, he was as steadfastly opposed to the conditions as he has been ever since they were first suggested. Newman, who suggest- ed the conditions, was not in parti- eularly good form, never really finding his touch until the last day of the match, when he made breaks of 404, 290, and 240, and made up a lot of leeway. But, as Smith was over 1,000 ahead when play began yesterday, this spurt was too late. Newman told our representative that he found the conditicus rather more detri- mental to his style of play than to the open game favoured by Smith; at the same time he paid a tribute to the marvellous stroke play which had brought Smith out in front. He said that the test match had revealed new possibili ties in billiards, and expressed his confidence that more would be seen of the brighter billiards pro2. duced by his conditions. The match was a complete, EUCCESS from the financial standpoint, the result being a substantial.contri- bution to the Industrial Welfare Society, in which the Duke of York takes a deep personal interest.. Final-scores: Smith, 8,000; Newman, 7,104.
