EMPIRE
WIRELESS...
AUSTRALIAN CRITICISM:
41
England be
Sydney, July 25-There is general satisfaction that deinite progress is now being made in the establishment of Empire wireless communication. It is understood that-the Commonwealth proposes. to erect immediately three "beam " stations in Australla, two com- municating with altemative routes, and one with Cada. The cost of the three stations works out at under a fourth of the cost of a single high- power station. If these are success- ful, additional stations will be erected for communicating with South Africa, the Far East, and elsewhere.
1
Mr. Fisk, discussing the scheme, informed me that he was confident that the "beam" stations would fully meet Australian requirements. Tests conducted locally did not confirm the depreciatory anticipa- lions of the British Post Office experts. which were CO more justified than their previous an ticipations. Indeed, their gloomy prophecies were one of the most hopeful features of the new system. For the Post Office first gaid:
that direct communication with Australia by 2 high-power impossible; then
station. was
WIN
that it
possible, but only for seven hours a
day; and, finally, that it was possible for the twenty-four hours Yet Post Office experts had never conducted experiments in wireless communication with Australia, nor had they explored the conditions. They had not even visited the country. No great rellance could be placed on their opinions with regard to the "beam" system. Mr. Fisk added that he was satisfied that they could work, across the Pacific for twenty hours a day, and possibly twenty-four, although the original contract for a high-power station provided only for twelve hours as the minimum:
Even if the "beam" system were dependent upon darkness, which is not established, Australia could operate through other stations for example, Canada, thus ensuring continuous communication. Higher speed beam stations, Mr. Fisk declared, would largely counteract the possible limitation of the period of transmission. Lower power and shorter wave- length "beam" stations would lend themselves inore readily to high speed than the long wave- lengths and high power used in big stations. The development of long-distance wireless telephonv would be rendered easier by “low-power stations.
Discussing the argument that a "beam" station could not be used in broadcasting for defence purposes, Mr. Fisk said the great advantage of the new system was that we could transmit to our own fleet and prevent the enemy from hearing. It was safer, for strategic purposes, to send messages along a "beam" with the knowledge that it could only be tapped on the Mae of that" beam" than to send
by the old method, under which message could be read simultaneously in every country in the world. It would be possible now to transmit a message along *beam from England to Australia which it would be im- possible to tap is Japan, China, Java, or United States. A series
of "beam" stations would en- able simultaneous transmission An various directions if neces- ary. In view of the greater capacity of a "beam sta- | tion, the Commonwealth Govern- ment were seeking guarantees 50 Koer cent. above the previous ar fangement, which provided for a aninimum of twenty words a minute" twelve hours a day, 8004 days the year. Mr. Fisk as çonfident That this guarantee · would
atly exceeded in actual practice.

Mr. Asquith.
Mr. Asquith, who has been na the Continent by the orders of his medical adviser, has not derived the benefit that was hoped for from a prolonged rest.
For some time, under strict medical advice, he has refrained from taking long journeys by train, and many of his political engage. ments have been cancelled during the past six months, as he was urged to confine his political activities to the House of Commons. Until the close of last year his, health had been invariably good, but the winter tried him severely, and his attack of influenza in the early part of this year did serious damage to his constitution. It will be recalled that early in April Mr. Lloyd George acted аб his substitute at Edinburgh, and important engage- ments at Paisley and elsewhere were cancelled. Again, so late as July 24 last, he was suffering from hoarseness, which he has not been able to get over during his sojourn abroad. Throughout the spring and early summer months there were unfounded reports as to Mr. Asquith's probable resigna- tion, but as late as June 25 he per- sanally contradicted these, and announced his intention of stand- ing again for Paisley at the next election. Since then, however, there have been anxious consulta- tions with friends and colleagues in the Liberal Party, and Mr. Asquith's withdrawal from the Leadership is within the bounds of possibility.
He has now returned home, and is resting in the country. Admission in a Will.
An admission that he had suffer- ed from religious mania, and later recovered, is made in the will of Mr. George Hill, of Bristol, retired journalist, who left £4,119. His will was lately the subject of the action Hill v. Wilmot, in which Mr. Justice Horridge pronounced. for its force and validity. It opens with the following statement: About the 18th day of March, 1921, Isuffered from a fit of, rej ligious enthusiasm, which took the form of writing a pamphlet on religion, and the religious enthusi aam increased, and later unques- tionably developed, imo religious manla.but about the 25th July, 1923, Lrocaverés may ordinary (common sènsti
