NAUGHTY CHILDREN,
To many people a child is "naughty" whenever he fails to do what is required of him by grown-ups.
It is a great mistake to judge a child by other standards than his own. He has not an adult code or morality. He knows the difference between elementary right and wrong, but has no eye for subtle differences and shades of meaning. He is only naughty when he offends against his own sense of right.
Cheerfulness, obedience, kind. ness-these elementary virtues wa have a right to expect of the child, for he is capable of understanding their meaning and of putting them into practice. The smallest baby can be shown that grizzling does not obtain for him what he wants; the child who has faith in the reasonableness of his mother rarely falls to obey her; the toddler who has been taught from babyhood to use his toys gently will not become rough when he is four years old.
But there are things which we have no right to expect. Children are naturally active; we have no right to try to make them sit still for long periods at a time. Children are lovers of the picturesque; they should not be credited with the
lio intent to when they are "romancing.".
