TALK OF POWERS INTERVENING:

There is still a scarcity of news by cable from either Peking or Shanghai. As regards the former, it can be taken for granted that war news, if there is any, is bound to be severely censored unless in favour of the forces of Wu Pei-fu. With regard to Shanghai, the battle for Liuho appears to have been the only major engagement so far. That took place four days ago and a brief account is given below, culled from the "Shanghai Mercury" of Saturday last.

A cable, received in local business circles, states that the Shanghai merchants are considering a plan, whereby they hope to “buy of” both the Chekinng and Klangsu leader. This news is of great importance if the scheme comes off.

Mr. Brutton described the pur- chase by Mrs. Violet Chan (sister of the plaintiff) of what after wards turned out to be the win- ning ticket at a Christmas-party held at 5, Arbuthnot Road. Some time after the race a letter drafted by witness claiming the prize was
