TRAIN DERAILED.
REMARKABLE MISHAP...
COACH ON GOLF LINKS
London, June 30.A serious accident occurred on Saturday morning at Baddon, near Dundee, an express, which left King's-cross at 7.30 on Friday night jusiping the rails and tearing up the permanent way for a considerable distance. The train was run in two portions, and the first portion had reached Baddon when the rear couplings apparently broke, j and mas cook from Buddon" Camp saw the vehicles jump joto the air. Seven coaches were derailed, and the rear coach left the rest and dived into the Burry Golf Course, the wheels being, deeply embedded in the fairway. The golf fence was ripped up for 300 yards.
The stretch of line between Montifieth and Barry is dead level, and the train was going' at about sixty miles an hour. The engine and first five conches escaped, but the wheels of the seven rear carriages slipped off to the north side and fully a quarter of a mile of permanent way was torn up. Sleepers, chairs, and ralls were smashed, and the track will have to be completely remade. Several carriages swung against the fence which divides Barry Golf Course from the railroad. The guard of the rear part of the train was severely shaken as his van ploughed over stones and sleepers, but he had the presence of mind. to seize one of the brakes, putting pressure to bear on the part derailed and bringing it to a standstill, thus Preventing the carriages being thrown on their broadside. The passengers appreciated the smooth- ness with which the driver pulled up the train and in a few minutes had been something like £10 collected for him.
After the accident one man was found fast asleep, and when an official entered the carriage he Has the train stopped?" called: Though it was feared that the train would catch fire there was до panic. An old lady wanted to jump out when the rending noise commenced, but she was persuaded to be calm. A soldier at Baddon Artillery Cimp said he saw the last coach leave the rails and amid a cloud of dust smash down the golf course fence. The rest of the train went on rocking violently.
Over 100 men later worked to clear the line, and three huge cranes lifted the damaged coaches out of the way. Goods and passenger traffic was worked on a single line, and later in the evening the road was clear. While the under parks of the carriages were wrecked the compartment seals were undan- aged, and the passengers agreed that they had had a miraculous escape. Major Stemp, senior super- Intendent of the London and North Eastern Railway, stated that while the rear portion of the traini was passing the trailing crossing at Buddon Station it became derailed owing, it is thought, to part of the gear of one of the coaches becom- ing detached and getting amongt the wheels
