REASONS. FOR CANCELLING PROGRAMME.

The following communication has been given to the Press by Dr. Rabindranath Tagore before lear- ing Fenang for India:

"It has been..... a matter of very great regret to me that I have not been able at this present time to fulfil my promise and stay in Malaya

my way back from China and Japan. My whole programme has been chang- ed owing to two causes-(1) My health became so bad, owing to the excessive strain of continual engagements and meetings in the Far East, that I obliged to give up any further thought of giving lectures until I had been able to regain strength. (i) I have been called quite un- expectedly. to be present at the Centenary Celebration, in South America which is to be held towards the end of the present year and I shall be obliged to leave India again on a very long journey soon after my return from the Far East. It was therefore necessary to hasten back to India and take some much needed rest in my own home and finish all arrangements for what will be a prolonged tour in

South Europe and America. I have not given up hope of spending same time in Malaya. When I go again to the Far East, I shall endeavour to begin my travels by staying and lecturing in Malaya instead of leaving it till the end of the programine.

Meanwhile I have left behind me my friend and fellow-worker, Mr. C. F. Andrews, who will visit the different places in Malaya and do his utmost to make up for the disappointment, which must naturally be caused by my
