SLANGUAGE.

ENGLISH ACTRESS ON AMERICANS.

(From Our Special Correspondent.) To those who are sceking to establish a better understanding |between the British and American nations, Miss Gertrude Lawrence, who'during the last five months has made a conspicuous hit on the New York stage, offers some amusing suggestions on the sub- ject of "Slanguage."

To check further annoyance caused by soldiers still unwilling to comply with Dr. Sun Yat-sen's order to move from the city to the outskirts, the seven wards along the Wal Ol Broadway in Canton have decided upon a joint alarm system. Whenever a shop along the Broadway is interfered with by an unruly soldier dad is unable to deal with him without aid from its neighbour, an alarm will be sounded. It appears that the shop keepers are no longer leaving this matter to the police.

TEA HOUSE TRIALS. (From Our Own Correspondent.

Tomorrow will find all tea houses in Canton closed, as the proprietors are only willing to increase the wages of the waiters and cooks: in their employ by 20 per cent. instead of by 40 per cent

At any rate, the as demanded. running of a tea-house in Canton these days is not very attractive as far as profit is concerned. The prices of sugar will be higher by 2 per cent, and 'the flour, by 5 per cent., unless the extra war taxes recently imposed on these two articles will be removed presently as petitioned by the Canton Sagar and Flour Gulla.
