LONDON, April 10. The Southampton strikers by an overwhelming majority have resolved nof to return to work.

[The conference of the London shipyard unipas involved in the Southampton strike reported that as there was not a two-thirds majority for con- tinuing the strike the Executive of each affiliated Union had ordered the men to return to work. It was hoped this will avert the lock-out. The lock

out notices have been withdrawn in the case of the Shipwrights Society which expelled its twelve hundred Southampton members.]

COAL MINERS' DEMAND.

LONDON, April 10, Mr. A. J. Cook, miners" agent in the Rhonda Valley, has been elected secretary of the Miners! Federation.

Formerly a Baptist preacher, he is a fivent; speaker, a disciple of Karl Marx and an active participant in the so-called miners' minority move- ment..

Interviewed, he said it would be difficult to avert a stoppage on the coalfields unless the miner demand for a living wage was conceded.

[The miners' delegate conference decided to take a ballot on the recommendation to reject the coa! owners' final offer to increase the minimum rate of wages from 20 to 33% per cent, and to give 87 per cent. of any surplus to wages and 13 per cent. to profits instead of the present 83 per cent. and 17 per cent. division.].

Shanghai, April 11. The Chinese gunboat "Chao returned to Shanghai on Wednesday after dispersing two pirate junk fleets which were infesting Chekiang waters.

The first fleet of nine junks was encountered off Sze Foh Tu. After a two-hour fight the gunboaf sank several junka, killing 24 pirates and capturing five. The chief of the gang, although wounded, jumped overboard and escaped.
