SHIPYARD LOCK-OUT IMMINENT,

COALFIELDS STOPPAGE POSSIBLE.

(Router's General Service.)

LONDON, April 10. The Southampton strikers by an overwhelming majority have resolved nof to return to work.

[The conference of the London shipyard unipas involved in the Southampton strike reported that as there was not a two-thirds majority for con- tinuing the strike the Executive of each affiliated Union had ordered the men to return to work. It was hoped this will avert the lock-out. The lock

out notices have been withdrawn in the case of the Shipwrights Society which expelled its twelve hundred Southampton members.]

COAL MINERS' DEMAND.

LONDON, April 10, Mr. A. J. Cook, miners" agent in the Rhonda Valley, has been elected secretary of the Miners! Federation.

Formerly a Baptist preacher, he is a fivent; speaker, a disciple of Karl Marx and an active participant in the so-called miners' minority move- ment..

Interviewed, he said it would be difficult to avert a stoppage on the coalfields unless the miner demand for a living wage was conceded.

[The miners' delegate conference decided to take a ballot on the recommendation to reject the coa! owners' final offer to increase the minimum rate of wages from 20 to 33% per cent, and to give 87 per cent. of any surplus to wages and 13 per cent. to profits instead of the present 83 per cent. and 17 per cent. division.].

AUSTRALIAN CO-OPERATION ASSURED.

'VISITING: ADMIRAL'S VIEWS.

(Reuter's Gineral Services.)

~ SYDNEY, April 10.

Government's decision to lay down two 10,000 ton defence in order to provide the most useful co- operation with the British Navy.

The Government was convinced that in the

interests of world peace the British Government's Singapore decision would not be final.

Dominions provided sufficient cruisers to guard Vice Admiral Field, replying, said that if the

their coast-lings while the main fleet was doing its proper business they could feel perfectly safe."

The most perfect base for Australian cruisers would be Port Darwin and there was an excellent repair base at Sydney.

FRANCE AND JAPAN.

DIPLOMATIC UNDERSTANDING!

SOME RECENT SIGNS.

LONDON, April 1 Denying_reports of the conclusion of a | Japanese and Rumanian offensive alliance directed against Russia, the Daily Telegraph's diplomatic correspondent says it is believed, however, that a French and Japanese understanding now exists covering the Pacific and Chinese questions.

The correspondent refers to the recent co-oper- ation between the French and Japanese Ministers at Tokio and says it has not escaped notice that the Japanese delegate to the League Council who torm erly voted on the side of Britain in Central European issues has voted with France at the two last sessions on questions like the Saar.
