EXCELLENCY'S

ADVICE.

Getting Rid Of The Incubus.

Following the Hon. Mr. H. E. Pollock's speech in the Legislative Council yesterday, voicing the unofficial's protest against what will assuredly come to be known as the "military lands squeeze," the Cound was addressed in turn by the Hon. Mr. P. H. Holyoak, the Hon. Mr. R. H. Kotewall, the Hon. Mr. A. R. Lowe, His Excellency the Governor, and His Excellency the General Officer Commanding.

With the exception of Major-General Fowler whose speech was in the nature of a reply to criticism the speakers generally voiced the view that, as far as the Colony was concerned, it was a matter of "Hobson's choice" and we must simply make the best we could of a bad bargain.

I do not think there are any grat difficulties in providing for the financing of this rather large scheme. I think that probably the existing balance will enable us to provide what is necessary before money begins to come in from the sale of land. If that is not the ease, my suggestion would be that w should mise money by short term we export to sell the rest of the hills maturing about the time when beat
