BRITISH TAXPAYER'S BURDEN.
LONDON, January 1. The association of the British Chambers of Commerce have for- warded a letter to Mr. Baldwin, Lord Curzon and Mr. Neville Chamberlain drawing attention to the fact that Franco and Italy ut present owe £1,189,000,000 to Great Britain; the interest on which, at five per cent., is equal to over a shilling in the pound of Income Tax at prosent paid in Great Britain. The repay cut of the American loan to Great Britain, £950,000,000, cost £36,000,000 year, equal to 8jd, in the pinne Income Tax.
The Council of the Association are of the opinion that in view of the adverse effect of high taxation on the trade of the country, the Government should consider whe- ther steps should not be taken to approach the French and Italian Governments with a view to seeur- ing payment on account, pendingg settlement of debts on a fair basis, with the object of relieving the British taxpayer.

LONDON, January 13. The death is ounced of Sir Richard David Muir, Kt.
Sir Richard David Muir las been a bencher of the Middle Bar since 1909 and Recorder of Col chester since 1911. He was at one time on the Times staf, Pross Gallery, House of Commons, and was in lis 66th year at the time of his death.
