THE THIRD SUNDAY IN ADVENT

THE EPISTLE.

The very brief Epistle appointed for this Sunday seems to have been chosen because of two points which it contains. In the first place. It sounds the finki warning note of Advent, "The Lord is at hand.”' This is the greatest truth that Advent has to teichts. The und is always at hand quite irrespective of his final coming, when the heavens and the earth of our] knowledge, and of ourexperience) shall pass away. He is always at hand in the lives of nations arid in the lives of individuals. It is be- cause his methods are so gentle, so persuasive, and so patient that we fail to see Him. He is trying to win us, and not to force us to His allegiance, and our mulish 'natures cannot understand the ways in which He deals with us.

But He is at hand also in the re- tribution that in the long run is visited upon nations and individu- als for their' evil 'deeds, even though for a long time they do notį. recognise this. He cannot be at hand as a saviour without being at hand as a judge also. We often fall to recognise the judgment, be cause of the patience that has leng- thened out the process.

I

Great were this fate who on the

earth' should linger,

"Sleep for an age and stir him-

self again,

"Watching Thy terrible and fiery

finger

"Shrivel the falsehood from the

souls of men."

The second reason for the choice of this Epistle seems to lie in the concluding lines of the passage, which take the form of a blessing, For what is the peace of God which passeth all understanding but Jesus Christ Himself? His Advent was heralded by the angels with the message, "peace on Earth." Milton "has 'caught up the idea and embodi- ed it in a pleasing fantasy in his hymn on the Nativity :-

But He, her fears to cease,

Sent down the meek eyed Peace; She, crown'd with olive green,

came softly sliding

Down through the turning sphere His ready harbinger

With turtle wing the amorous

clouds dividing;

And waving wide hermyrtle.wand, She strikes a universal peace

through' sea and land.

No war, or battle's sound

Was heard the world arcund: The idle spear and shield were

high uphung:

The hook'ed chariot stood Unstain'd with hostile blood;

The trumpet spake not to the

arm'ed throng;

And kinge sat still with awful eye, As if they surely knew their

sovran Lord was by.

1

But the thought is much deeper than Milton's allegorical method suggests. It can be seen hest of klin St. Paul's "Epistle to the Ephesians. At one time, saya tho Apostle to his converts, ye were without Christ, having no hope, but now He is our peace.

THE GOSPEL.

The Gospel which gives us the Baptist's description-of-himself will recall to lovers of Words- worth that poet's verses on the Cuckoo "Thrice welcome, darling of the

spring

་ ་

:

Even yet thou art to me

No bird, but an invisible thing..

A voice, a mystery.”
