Beatrice Grimshaw, whose latest novel, "Nobody's Island," bas just been published, is an English- woman who owns and cultivates a large vanilla plantation on a coral island off the coast of New Guinea, "Here warmth and food come almost of themselves," she writes, (I withdraw the 'almost' as regards warmth) and clothing is light and cheap. I have put in vanilla. Five acres, replanted occasionally and, if necessary, shifted, will keep one in something more than comfort, with the labour of five or six boys coating in all 25/-a month cach. The crop comes inside of two years (here) and one can get the vanilla free, from the Govern ment gardens.
