COMMERCIAL NOTES,
BIG DEMAND FOR LAUNCHES.
CANTON TRADE CONDITION.
There is at present, a great детаца for steam-launches" in Canton, 'A Chinese merchant who came down 'during the week-end, has boen negotiating for the hire of i threo and is prepared to pay $8 much as $40 Canton currency, per day, exclusive of onel, stores and wages.
COMMATEE.
Ho informed a China'-Mail ma that the demand for launches was due to their being needed to replace | junka, speed being necessary on account of the danger from pirates. Another reason was the requisition- ing of launches by the military, this reducing the number available for He also stated that a harvest awaited launches flying for- eign flags and under foreign registry.
Commenting on trade generally,¦ the merchant was unwilling to attribute entirely to political distur- bances, the reduced turnover. thinks it is also due to this being the last year of the cycle of sixty (an omen of bar times.) He alleged that lovies were now imposed on gelain, transit in all parta of the province as much as 95 cents being collected on a picul bag of sugar fran Canton to Fatshan. The eflectors, he stated, were three different batches of soldiers and banditry who demanded varying suns for "passage on the water."
SUGAR IMPORTS.
Не
About thirteen thousand bags of Java sugar for Nem Pak Hong, and a large quantity for the refineries, arrived during the week-end. About sixty thousand bags are also expect- ed by five steamers which are com- ing in during the next few days. This has had the effect of producing a quieter tone in the local augur market. Importera are marking, time, about $16-70 being quoted, per picul, for the best lots of No. 24 rough white, and from $16.40 to
$16.56 for other samples. Small 'lots have been offered by speculators at as much as 70 cents per picul lower. A drop has been recorded in quotations for futures."
FLOUR MARKET.
There in no change to record, prices being as published on Satur-
day
RICK MARKET.
Up-country paddy crops are now ready for harvesting but there is no drop in local prices. Superior quality Siam is up a few cents, but, other grades rozanin stationary.
YACHTING.
LADIES' CHAMPIONSHIP.
Thirteen boats started in the first of the ladies' championship yacht races which took place yesterday afternoon. The boats got away to a superb start and there was some very fine sailing.
The start and finish were at the Club House and the mark boats were at Kowloon Dock and Black- head's, both being taken on the port hard. This course was sailed twice and the distance was 5 miles. The wind was easterly and the force about 3.
The start was at 3 p.m., and the finishing and corrected time are as under:

ON A NEW CRAZE.
I propose to take as subject of my song -
The prospective growth and triumph of Mah Jong (In which plan I am supported
By the fact which can't be thwarted— There are several well-assorted
Rhymes in "ong").
Out of China (whence we also gain Souchong) Came this latest boon and blessing of Mah Jongt
Now in London Town it riges, So it should, by easy stages, Reach our own suburban sages
Before long.
Yes, I think you'll find the pastime of Mah Jong
At our northern parties shortly going stronK I
But I don't know how you play it (Does one back a "Jong" or lay it?) So I may (with grief I say it) Be all wrong
Do they play it to the beating of a gong,
This inviting, this exciting game Mah Jong
At the subsequent collation
Do the guests (with imprecation) Use a chopstick for their ration
Or a prong?
Does light conversation help the game along? Does one chatter as one joins the earnest throng?
Or sit sllent as a mummy?
Does it need a fourth of dummy?
Is It aught like nap or rummy," This Mah Jong?
Are there "local rules," I wonder, in Mah Jong?
Is the code the same from Bolivar to Bhong? Though the thought a trifle strange is
It may be the custom changes
As from Harrogate one ranges
To Hongkong.
My inquiries now enwrap me like a thoug;
But I'm told a doom has sounded ding-a-dong ;
Bridge is fighting for survival,
So, with praises adjectival,
I salute the glad arrival
Of Mah Jong.
