Governor Friend W. Richardson, of Califorala, has emphatically denied that he promised a political appointment to George D. Hard- wick, former secretary to A. E. Boynton, Chairman of the California Republican State Committee, for causing the publication of the now famous "Johnson to McClatchy Letter." Stoker evidence, mm,

In the State's Attorney's investigation the charges made in Chi- cago by Mrs. Helen Elwood Stokes that her husband, WE D. Stokes, multi-millionaire New York sportsman, victim of the "shooting show girls," is seeking by conspiracy to defame her reputation, private letters from Stokes to a Chicago detective agency were seized. These letters indicate that Stokes was seeking affidavits to prove that Mrs. Stokes was formerly a member of the notorious Everleigh Club, in Chicago. In his divorce action in New York, which he lost, Stokes even named his son by his first wife as one of the co-respondents, but Jater withdrew that charge. Although Stokes lost the suit, the trial judge, died before signing the decree, and the case must be tried again. It is in the preparation for that trial that Stokes is charged with cons- piring to secure perjured affidavits..
