GOOD LUCK.
NEW STEAMER'S MAIDEN TRIP.
POLITICAL SIGNIFICANCE
UNIQUE CANTON FUNCTION.
After exciting much glowing praise in Hongkong from people who visited her here before she left for her maiden trip, the Hongkong, Canton and Macao Steamboat Company's fine new river steamer "Lung Shan "won yet further tributes when she reached Canton on Saturday. At the invitation of the Directors, many well-known Shameen residents and prominent-Canton-officials came on board for tiffin, and these together with the ship's guests from Hongkong made a very notable gathering. With a galaxy of officials which the Hon. Mr. Holyoak said myst have been unique in Canton's history, it was only natural that the speeches should have had a political colour. Brilliant in itself as a social function, the tiffin therefore acquired also al most an international importance.

affect the prosperity of both. There fore this gathering must do much to cement the bonds of friendship between the two ports, Mutual co-operation between the two is essential to the fullest development | of the possibililles of both. Strange though it may seem, my Company will welcome the day when not only is the railway communication between Canton and Kowloon stabiilsed and Increased but also
the day when that larger development is finished and Canton is finally linked with Hankow. Expensive though this must prove, it will nevertheless justify both the effort and the out- lay to see it completed, for it is inseparably bound up with the greater prosperity of both Canton and Hongkong.
